Local SEO in Morocco: showing up on Google Maps in your city
Relevance, distance, prominence: Google's three local ranking factors, and what you can do this week for your Business Profile.

Key takeaway
To show businesses on Google Maps, Google ranks them on three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. A complete, accurate Google Business Profile, reviews from real customers that you reply to, and the same contact details everywhere make the difference. You cannot pay for a better ranking.
In Morocco, Google handles 95.38% of searches (StatCounter, September 2026). When a customer types "dentist", "plumber" or "restaurant" followed by their city, the map at the top of the results often decides who they call. Getting onto that map is what local SEO is all about: here is how Google picks the businesses that appear on it, and what you can do to be one of them.
How does Google choose the businesses on Maps?
Google spells it out: local ranking rests on three factors, relevance, distance and prominence (Google Business Profile Help). It also states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
| Factor | What Google says | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well your profile matches what someone is searching for | Pick the right category, describe your services precisely |
| Distance | How far you are from the person searching | Give an exact address or a real service area |
| Prominence | How well-known your business is; review count and positive ratings can help | Earn reviews from real customers, get mentioned on other sites |
You can't change distance. The other two factors you can: that is where the work happens.
How do you get your business on Google Maps?
Everything starts with a Google Business Profile, your shop window on Maps. Create one (or claim the one that already exists), then verify it: Google requires this before you can manage the profile, by phone or text, email, video or post, depending on the options it gives you (Google Help). Google also asks for the profile to be complete and accurate, regular and special hours included (Google). Its presentation rules are precise (Google guidelines):
- The name must be your business's real-world name. No tagline, phone number, hours, URL or "best dentist in town" added to it: that can lead to the profile being suspended.
- The address must be precise. P.O. boxes are not accepted.
- One profile per location. Creating several profiles for the same place is not allowed.
- Do you travel to your customers? Set a service area and hide your address.
Then add your services, a clear description, and real photos of your premises, your team and your work. Google points out that photos and videos show what you offer.
How do you get Google reviews without breaking the rules?
Reviews matter to Google and to your customers: according to Ipsos, 47% of Moroccan shoppers always check reviews (Ipsos, July 2024). But Google's review rules are strict (contribution policy):
- Not allowed: buying reviews, or getting them in exchange for a discount, a gift or any other incentive.
- Not allowed: asking only happy customers, or discouraging negative reviews.
- Not allowed: pressuring customers to leave a review on your premises.
- Not allowed: reviews from your staff, former staff or contractors (conflict of interest).
- Allowed: asking all your customers to share their genuine experience, with no incentive and no steering of the rating.
In practice: a direct link to your profile, sent on WhatsApp to every customer after the job, with one simple sentence. Then reply to every review, positive or negative. Google says so: replying shows you value your customers' feedback.
A negative review is not a disaster
Reply calmly, share no personal details about the customer, and offer a way forward. Future customers read your reply as closely as the complaint.
Why must your contact details match everywhere?
People often talk about "NAP" consistency: name, address, phone. Google doesn't publish it as a factor under that name, but it is common-sense good practice. If your profile, website, Facebook page and directories show three phone numbers and two different addresses, customers get confused, and you lose calls.
- Settle on one version: exact name, address written the same way, one main number.
- Update it on your Google profile, your website and your social accounts.
- Fix the directories and platforms where you already appear.
- Check again whenever you move or change numbers.
Your website plays a part too: one page per service, naturally mentioning your city, helps Google understand what you do and where. The same foundations serve AI answers, as we explain in showing up in ChatGPT and Google's AI answers.
How long does local SEO take in Morocco?
Be wary of promises of "first place in a few days". Some Moroccan agencies give more honest timelines: a few weeks for Google Maps, 3 to 6 months for the website's organic SEO (Boughaz Digital). Nobody can guarantee a position, and Google says so itself (Google Search Central). The pace also depends on the competition in your city and on how many real customers leave a review over the months: it is steady work, not a one-off job.
And at BrightIntent, how much does it cost?
Setting up or overhauling your Google Business Profile costs 1 500 to 3 000 DH excl. VAT, once. Our monthly local SEO service costs from 2 300 DH excl. The profile stays in your name, with you as owner. Details are on the SEO in Morocco page. For an estimate that fits, build your online quote.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Google Business Profile free?
Yes, creating one costs nothing. What you pay for is the time to fill it in properly, keep it up to date and manage reviews.
Can I pay Google to be first on Maps?
No. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Sponsored ads exist, but they are labelled as such.
Can I offer a discount in exchange for a review?
No. Reviews obtained for an incentive are against Google's rules and can be removed. You can, however, ask all your customers to share their experience, with nothing in return.
I work from home: do I have to show my address?
No. If you travel to your customers, Google provides a service area and asks you to hide your address.
How do I put my business on Google Maps?
Create or claim your Google Business Profile, verify it, then enter a precise address or a service area. Then check that the pin sits in the right place on the map: distance is calculated from it.
Why doesn't my business show up on Google Maps?
Common causes: a profile that was never verified, a suspended profile (for example, a tagline added to the name), the wrong category, or a search made too far from your location. Start by checking the profile's status in your Google account.
Do I need a website to appear on Google Maps?
No, the profile can exist without a website. A site does help Google understand your services, and it gives your customers more information than the profile: one page per service, mentioning your city, is enough to start.
